Shrink Smart - The Governance of Shrinkage

The Donetsk-Makijïvka Conurbation / Ukraine

Since its foundation in 1869 and until the early 1990s, the city of Donetsk and the surrounding urban areas have enjoyed a continuous growth in population. The collapse of the USSR in 1991 however, has resulted in a severe and protracted economic depression, with a massive loss of regular employment, decline in living standards and an acute demographic crisis. The conurbation has lost about 12 percent of its population, whereby population losses in the Makijivka-subcentre are considerably higher. Public response are burdened with a lack of resources, so that most initiatives are business-led and concentrate on the centre of the city.
