Leipzig - Halle / Germany
The region Leipzig-Halle is situated in East Germany. Whereas Leipzig is an example for long-term shrinkage, Halle’s population has grown until the end of the 1980’ies. After the reunification of Germany both cities have tremendously lost population. The most visible consequence are intensive housing vacancies. Supported by a federal programme “Stadtumbau Ost” (Urban Regeneration East), Leipzig and Halle have both started large-scale demolition of vacant residential houses.
