Project Objectives
Within SURFACE, the status quo of administrative and political strategies for land consumption will be gathered – both on national and international levels. For selected countries, there will be detailed studies. The analysis concentrate on land consumption for residential and transport purposes, but other forms (e.g. desertification or soil contamination) will be considered, too. Thereby SURFACE will support implementing the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations (SDGs), with a focus on SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) by identifying linkages between the SDGs and national targets as well as policy instruments for the reduction of land consumption. Based on empirical studies, specific proposals for indicators and monitoring concepts concerning land consumption in a European context will be developed.
