Green and Blue into Grey: Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation in Urban Development and Urban Development Funding - 2nd Expert Forum on Urban Development Funding in Saxony, 10 November 2022

The last summer with great heat, pronounced lack of precipitation and even the smell of forest fires from rural areas in urban areas has once again made it clear to all of us that climate change is also massively affecting the cities and municipalities in Saxony. Urban development policy must react to this.

The 2nd Expert Forum on Urban Development Promotion in Saxony addressed the challenges posed by climate change in urban development in general and in urban development promotion in particular in the tried and tested workshop format.

The following exciting topics were addressed in five workshops:

WS 1: Does climate adaptation hinder urban district development? Requirements for urban development planning
WS 2: Water-sensitive urban development and sponge cities: decentralised water retention as an important contribution to climate protection and climate adaptation
WS 3: "Going green outside": climate-friendly building design
WS 4: Green in the city as climate protection and quality of stay
WS 5: Energy solutions in urban renewal - a neighbourhood perspective

Parliamentary Evening "The Climate-Resilient City", 8 November 2022 in Berlin

Climate change is becoming a particular challenge for our urban life: asphalt and facades, for example, heat up particularly strongly in summer, and extreme weather such as heavy rainfall pushes the infrastructure to its limits. Worldwide, almost 60 percent of people live in cities, and the number is constantly increasing - here in Germany as well. As the global temperature continues to rise, the challenges facing cities and the people who live in them are becoming ever greater.

How can we make our cities climate-friendly and at the same time make them fit for the future? This is what the Helmholtz Climate Initiative and Helmholtz SynCom, together with invited stakeholders, discussed at a Parliamentary Evening on 8 November.

Intelligent green roof pilot plant

The retention green roof carport is currently under construction at the UFZ. From autumn 2021, important key figures on the water and energy balance will be generated here and irrigation experiments will be carried out. The green roof carport is being built and studied in collaboration with Optigrün of Tilia GmbH and the Fraunhofer IGB. The special feature also lies in the equipment with a heat exchanger system.

Tree trenches in Leipzig/Gohlis

At the end of 2020, the tree trenches in Kasseler Straße in Leipzig/Gohlis were completed. In cooperation with the Sieker planning office and the city of Leipzig, 3 research variants with sensor technology have been installed: without a bottom trough, with a concrete trough and with a clay trough. In 2021, important key figures on the water balance of the tree trenches will be collected and exchanged with the partner project BlueGreenStreets among others.
