Current research

The specific topic of the PhD project is the development of novel isolation and fractionation procedures for comprehensive characterisation of contaminants using effect-directed analyses (EDA).
Combined extraction/fractionation protocols, involving different sorption/ion exchange mechanisms, were investigated with the aim to develop practical and highly efficient procedures, providing high yields for a wide variety of non-ionic and ionic organic compounds. The fractionation procedures were developed using a tiered approach, which allows development of a simple protocol suitable for the routine EDA screening as well as protocols for higher tier fractionation.
Chemical characterization of the fractionated extracts was performed in a comprehensive manner, using an integrated procedure, combining complementary features of high-resolution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and ultra-performance liquid chromatography /quadrupole-time-of- flight mass spectrometry (UPLC/QTOF) for the structural elucidation.
The developed procedure for ecotoxicological assessment of organic contaminants will be applied in detailed EDA studies that will be carried out at the selected locations in Croatia.

Expertise

  • UPLC-MS, HPLC-MS/MS
  • GC/MS
  • Preparative HPLC
  • Solid-phase extraction (SPE) of the complex mixtures involving different SPE materials (e.g. HLB, anionic and cationic exchangers)
  • Fractionation protocols combining different chromatographic systems (NP-LC, RP-LC, SE-LC)

Research interests

  • Development and application of integrated procedures for the isolation and identification of toxicants in complex environmental mixtures using effect-directed analysis (EDA).
  • Target and non-target screening of organic compounds in environmental samples using UPLC-MS/MS and GC-MS.
