Role of riverine and coastal wetlands for climate adaptation, climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation
Climate change and biodiversity loss are two closely interlinked global crises that influence each other and must be addressed together. Nature-based solutions can link climate change mitigation and adaptation with the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems. Such nature-based solutions include, for example, the protection and restoration of wetlands, such as river floodplains and coasts. These vital ecosystems not only provide a habitat for numerous animal and plant species, but also sequester carbon, contribute to flood regulation and coastal protection, and provide many other ecosystem services.
Since 2011, BfN is organizing a series of "European Conferences on Biodiversity and Climate Change" in cooperation with the Network of Heads of European Nature Conservation Agencies (ENCA Network). In each conference, selected key topics are discussed and further developed with European experts from science, policy and practice.
The aim of the conferences is to foster exchange and networking among experts from all over Europe and to strengthen the science-policy-practice interface. A focus lies on the policy relevance and the applicability of the conference results.
Due to their high relevance in the context of biodiversity and climate
change, the 5th conference in this series will focus on the role of riverine and coastal wetlands for
climate adaptation, climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation.
With this project, we want to contribute to a better integration of
biodiversity conservation and climate change at the European level and to
ensure that both issues are addressed in synergy.
