Excursion to the alluvial forest of Leipzig

Alluvial forests are the natural type of vegetation along rivers and are strongly influenced by regularly flooding and high groundwater levels. Due to their small-scale mosaic of different site conditions that offer an "ecological niche" for a large number of species, alluvial forests count among the most species rich and essential habitats in Europe. Alluvial forests have a high recreational value, contribute to flood protection, improve groundwater quality and play a key role in controlling structure and function of the entire river ecosystem. However, due to forest clearings, changing and straightening of water courses and regulation of floods, alluvial forests are one of the most threatened forest types in Europe.

After the morning session at the conference, the excursion will take you to the alluvial forest of Leipzig, which is one of the largest and best preserved alluvial forests of Central Europe. A bus will bring you to the forest station “Auwaldstation” in the northeast of Leipzig. This station is located between the local rivers “Luppe” and “Weiße Elster” and builds the entrance to the conservation area “Burgaue”. A guided tour will take you along the river “Nahle” and “Luppe”, giving information on background, biodiversity and the key role of alluvial forests. The tour will stop at some interesting points to share information on anthropogenic influences, water quality and contaminations found in sediments.

The excursion is arranged in cooperation with the Auwaldstation Leipzig:
