OGS Training Course: “Geothermal Energy Systems” at UCAS

The international OGS training course 2017 on “Geothermal Energy Systems” was held from 20-28.06.2017 in Huairou (northeast of Beijing) directed by JProf. SHAO Haibing. The training course was hosted by the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) and organized by the Institute of Geology and Geophysics (CAS-IGG) courtesy Prof. PANG Zhonghe. The training was based on the OGS Tutorials (Geothermal Energy I-III, see links below) and addressed the topics “Basics of Geothermal Processes” (by Olaf Kolditz), “Shallow Geothermal Systems” (by Haibing Shao) and “Deep Geothermal Energy Systems” (by Franceso Parisio). More than 40 participants from UCAS and various external institutions attended the OGS training course.

Leipzig, 29 August 2016 -- Research grant awarded to Haibing Shao by National Natural Science Foundation

JProf. Dr. Haibing Shao

Junior-Prof. Haibing Shao has been awarded a research grant from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSFC) in the amount of 24,000 EUR (180 000 RMB). The grant (Nr. 41628203) targets Chinese scientists working at foreign institutes to facilitate their academic exchange between Chinese institutions. As a jointly appointed Junior Professor by UFZ and TU Freiberg, Dr. Shao has been working on the numerical modelling of coupled subsurface processes in the context of shallow geothermal energy utilization. He has established very close ties with the Institute of Geology and Geophysics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGG-CAS). The funding will support him and his team members to visit Chinese institutions, give lectures, and attend international conferences.

Deep Geothermal Resources Conference

During this event, organized by the China University of Geosciences, the Sino-German - Geothermal Research Centre (SG-GRC) was launched as intended after the Sino-German Symposium on “Sustainable Utilization of Geothermal Energy Resources” in October 2015. The interim chair team of the new center consists of Profs. Kolditz, Pang, Shao and Kong for next agenda setting. SG-GRC shall become a hub for joint geothermal research including project generation, education and networking.
