Work packages
The PROMOTE research program is divided into seven work packages as outlined in the figure.

The seven work packages of the PROMOTE project
WP 1 - Screening
The objectives of WP 1 - Analytical screening for polar pollutants of industrial origin - are:
- Development of novel analytical methods suitable for screening for PMOC
- Screening of water in five river basins for the occurrence of PMOC
- Obtaining data of pollutants from different (associated) partner locations and water type
WP 2 - Prioritization
The objectives of WP 2 - Prioritization based on REACH registration data - are:
- Prioritize persistent and polar chemicals or transformation products (PMOC) from the compounds registered under REACH
- Develop criteria to identify uses under REACH that may cause a contamination of source waters, based on volume emitted and emission release category (industry/municipal)
WP 3 - Transformations
The objectives of WP 3 - Laboratory study on environmental stability of target substances and on transformation products - are:
- Understanding the occurrence and fate of selected classes of chemicals, including stability, removal efficacy in wastewater treatment, transformation products
- Identification of transformation products of selected REACH chemicals
WP 4 - Monitoring
The objectives of WP 4 - Monitoring of European river and drinking water systems - are:
- Development of targeted quantitative (and semi-quantitative) methods for previously detected and prioritized PMOC (WP1 and 2) and transformation products (from WP3)
- Providing concentration data of novel PMOC in different river basins and in different compartments of the water cycle
- Verification of information on occurrence of PMOC (WP1) and transformation products (WP3)
- Detection of source of PMOC determined in the screening for industrial chemicals
WP 4-NL - Dutch satellite project objectives:
- Monitoring of target compounds and transformation products: Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances, halogen-free flame retardants based on phenylphosphates
- Comprehensive non-target screening of surface waters and drinking water
- Sample collection from source waters and the drinking water production cycle in The Netherlands
- Provision of tools for an assessment of toxicological relevance of monitoring results from WP4 (to be used in WP6)
WP 5 - Advanced treatment
The objectives of WP 5 - Advanced treatment and mitigation methods - are:
- Investigation of the removal of selected PMOC during oxidation treatments (ozonation, chlorine disinfection)
- Evaluate the efficiency of catalytic ozonation and combination of ozone/GAC for the mineralisation of PMOC
- Assessing the role of the selected contaminants as a source of potential toxic compounds
WP 6 - Recommendations
The objectives of WP 6 - Mitigation strategies and recommendations - are:
- Assignment of PMOC to different mitigation groups
- Recommendation of mitigation strategies for the different groups
- Risk assessment of selected compounds
WP 7 - Outreach
The objectives of WP 7 - Communication and interaction with stakeholders and the public - are:
- Support of communication and data exchange between the partners
- Dissemination of results to the public and to scientists
- Communication with relevant stakeholder groups to elaborate project recommendations
