International Water Research Alliance Saxony
The International Water Research Alliance Saxony - IWAS aims to contribute to an Integrated Water Resources Management in hydrologically sensitive regions by developing specific system solutions as a response to some of the most pressing water-related problems of our time. This includes contributions to the research topics related to drinking water supply and waste water disposal, agricultural irrigation, ecosystem services as well as extreme events and processes.
IWAS was a project of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ, the Dresden Technical University and the Stadtentwässerung Dresden (member of German Water Partnership - GWP). The project was funded from 2008 – 2013 by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Due to the excellent collaboration of the scientific project partners within the field of Integrated Water Resources Management the goal of the Dresden Technical University and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ was to establish a joint water research centre.
The opening ceremony for the foundation of the Center for Advanced Water Research" (CAWR) took place in October 2013. The CAWR brings together the water competences of both institutions. As a joint center between a university and a non-university research institute with a focus on inter- and transdisciplinary water research, the CAWR emphasizes its work on the fields of research, education & training and transfer.
