White biotechnology
White biotechnology is the use of biological tools and procedures for the optimization of industrial processing. In this context, distinctions are made between biotransformation, i.e. enzyme and cell catalyzed conversions and fermentative manufacture.
Whereas a single or only small number of processes occur in the course of biotransformation, fermentative processes employ entire metabolic pathways.
