Research interests
During my PhD I participated in several research cruises studying the distribution of major bacterioplankton groups in the Atlantik Ocean. Focussing on the water column I could show that some bacterioplankton groups have a distinct distribution pattern over depth or over the ecological regions that change with latitude.
Currently I am participating in a project investigating the biochemical pathways and microorganisms involved in the complete breakdown of contaminants like BTEX in polluted aquifers. My part in this project is the development of an autonomous in situ profiler to measure parameters like oxygen content in the aquifer. The aim of the developement of a new profiler is to enhance the resolution of depth profiles in aquifers, which commonly ranges between 0.3 - 1 m, and therefore enables us to detect changes in centimeter range.
