The experiment was intended to complement experiments started a few years earlier which looked at the nutritional requirements of different crops.
The Park Grass experiment at Rothamsted, UK, was started in 1856. Treatments have dramatic effect on plant species composition and divrsity. It is regarded as the foremost long-term ecological study in the world.
