Outline

With Kili-SES we investigate the interactions and interdependencies between people and nature at Mount Kilimanjaro under land-use, climate, and governance change. We will advance fundamental social-ecological research and provide a scientific basis for political and societal decision-making that will facilitate transformation towards sustainable relationships between nature and people at Kilimanjaro. More information on the project can be found here.
The UFZ’s role in the project is to conduct and coordinate research activities. The thematic foci are to provide a holistic understanding of the Kilimanjaro social-ecological system by synthesizing systems, target and transformation knowledge. This involves examining both natural and social drivers and effects, with the goal of pinpointing avenues for policy. Scientific coordination at UFZ encompasses overseeing the entire research unit, including budgeting, organizing meetings and workshops for this highly interdisciplinary team, together with many other project-related tasks. Moreover, we curate the Kilimanjaro SES database, which follows state-of-the art data management practices including datasets from KiLi-1 (2010-2018), Kili-SES-1 (2020-2025), and Kili-SES-2.
