BIOTOX PhD Student Sebastian Gutsfeld honored at the 2023 Society of Toxicology Meeting in Nashville, TN, USA
The work of PhD Student Sebastian Gutsfeld, pictured here with his mentor Prof. Dr. Tamara Tal, was recognized at the 2023 Society of Toxicology Meeting in Nashville, USA. Sebastian’s research on the molecular mechanisms by which exposure to structurally similar Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) cause visual startle response hyperactivity in early life stage zebrafish was honored by the Carl C. Smith Graduate Student Award (First Place). This prestigious award was earned in a two-stage process. The first was based on Sebastian’s abstract, two-page research synopsis, and two letters of support. In a second, invited stage, Sebastian submitted a full-length, unpublished manuscript. Sebastian’s research was also recognized by the Toshio Narahashi Trainee Conference Endowment Award, earned by applicants whose research impacts the field of neurotoxicology.
The goal of PrecisionTox is to improve chemical safety assessment to better protect human health and the environment by using non-traditional test species, multiple fields of knowledge, and powerful computational approaches to understand which chemicals are toxic and why.

PlasticsFatE - Plastics Fate and Effects in the human body aims at improving our present understanding of the impact of micro- and nano-plastics (MP/NP) and associated additives/adsorbed contaminants (A/C) in the human body. To do so, reliable and validated methods will be developed that are able to generate the science-based data we need. PlasticsFatE is a 48-month project funded by the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme of the European Union. The project will run from 1st April 2021 to 31st March 2025.
