Epidemiology

With respect to spatio-temporal dynamics, epidemiology is a specific field of community ecology. However, disease management changes the focus of research questions.

Current and previous projects:

Rabies in vector communities

rabies risk
The availability of several potent disease vectors affects disease spread and persistence. We aimed at developing management options for emergency control of rabies in wildlife vector communities, considering in particular the species-specific ecology of the vectors. The graph shows contour lines for the risk of rabies persistence depnding on host density, if vaccination is applied either to foxes, both host species.

Immuno-contraception for rabies control in urban dogs

Urban dog populations present a major risk for spread of rabies to humans. However, disease control is limited due to population elasticity, animal accessibility and resources. In two master student projects, we analysed the effectiveness of a new population control method immuno-contraception (compared to standard control methods) for population and disease control in urban dog populations.

Science supporting policy

I am interested in the science communication to policy makers.
