Abstract

PROTECTION OF GROUND WATER WITH AFFORESTATION OF PREVIOUSLY INTENSIVELY FARMED AREAS?

A common opinion in Germany about protection of ground water against pollution from agricultural land management is afforestation of such sensitive areas. In a lysimeter trial a comparison between different forms of land management as extensivation, best management practices (BMP), fallow and afforestation shows that in the first two years after planting the trees the amount of seepage water and leaching of nutrients is higher as at the other variants. Because of the increasing of interception evaporation. In the third year after conversion there is a strongly reduction of seepage water recharge and leaching of nutrients. The afforestation of previously farmed land leads not directly to an improvement of ground water quality.
