Abstract | A problem known in Western Europe since the 1960s has arisen again in eastern Germany. Natural gas escaping from underground gas mains displaces soil air and the main compound methane is being oxidized by methanotrophic bacteria, mainly type II methanotrophs. Methane concentrations between 30 and 55 vol./ could lead to phytotoxic concentrations of methanotrophic metabolites. However, agricultural substances like urease or nitrification inhibitors are able to inhibit the growth of methanotrophic cultures. The inhibition method of microbial methane oxidation combined with soil aeration is designed to condition the damaged soil for replanting. |
