Abstract

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) establishes the requirements for the monitoring of the surface water status. The water quality in the River Elbe displays extreme spatial and temporal variability which can not be covered even by extreme sampling efforts. Therefore the presentation addresses the following questions (i) Is sampling according to the WFD monitoring guidelines suitable to cover seasonal variations of the water quality? (ii) What are the consequences of WFD monitoring for the calculation of annual loads of the transported matter? Results of several monitoring and evaluation methods are compared mainly using the example of trace metals, nutrients and suspended particulate matter (SPM). Values of dissolved and particulate concentrations are discussed. The samples were taken at Magdeburg monitoring site.
