Abstract The water moss, Fontinalis antipyretica, was used for passive and active biomonitoring of metals in aquatic systems. For passive biomonitoring, plant material from different sites in the Harz region was collected. For active biomonitoring, plant material was exposed in locations of the river Elbe and of a former copper mining area in Central Germany (Mansfelder Land). The accumulation factors for the metals Mn, Fe, Cr, Ni, Co, As, Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu were calculated in relation to the background concentrations. In addition, Cd uptake was measured under laboratory conditions. The results indicate that F. antipyretica is a suitable biomonitor for metals over a wide range of concentrations.
