Abstract The agricultural landscape In Central Germany - how to manage It? - Because of its highly
fertile soils, the (relatively) dry region in Central Germany has been used for agricultural purposes for
hundreds of years. Since the early 1950s, agricultural activities have become more intensive, leading to
formation of large fields and a landscape characterised by very few woods, hedges and tree-lined
avenues. This paper presents assessment results of the following important landscape functions: soil
erosion, water retention and productivity. These functions are evaluated by means of an optimisation
procedure that works out a compromise between the functions. It is intended to change land use on
about 7 % of the whole area (4240 ha) from intensive to more extensive management, or to exclude
parts of it from agricultural cultivation altogether. The following concept of landscape planning
proposes a division of large fields with new copses, hedges, field edges or lanes. These measures would
increase the biological diversity, requiring a reduction of the productivity of arable land only by 4 %.
The costs of new structures in the agricultural landscape are assessed.
