Abstract A new approach of spatially explicit, individual-based modelling of plant populations, the FON (field of neighbourhood) approach, tries to combine the advantages of earlier approaches while avoiding their limitations: individuals have a circular zone of influence with a radius which is related to the size of the individuals. Within this zone of influence, a "field of neighbourhood" describes the influence, i.e. competition, on neighbouring plants. We study the temporal development of mean competition strength, biomass, and size distribution in a cohort of hypothetical plant species. In different scenarios we combine random and hexagonal spatial arrangement of plants, different population densities, and a homogeneous and an exponentially declining field of neighbourhood. Our results confirm earlier results obtained with the ZOI approach. We therefore conclude that the phenomenological description of individual competition in the FON approach leads to biologically reasonable results similar to those, which are based on a more mechanistic (but less flexible) notion of resource competition.
