Abstract One attractive aspect of thermodesorption is the minimal additional sample preparation required. We evaluated the potential of thermodesorption coupled with GC-MS for the fast analysis of nitrated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAH) for the determination of particulate matter.

The optimization of thermodesorption is described and recovery rates are determined. Defection limits between 0.3 and 14.5 mug mL(-1) were obtained for the compounds studied under optimized conditions. The results exhibited good reproducibility with standard deviations of 2-8%.
