Abstract

Free grazing and infrequent rototilling are presented as two alternative management systems to conserve the species richness of dry nutrient-poor grasslands. Both systems are characterised by secondary successions which are setback periodically, in the first case by browsing animals, in the second case by rototilling. Accepting succession in conservation management means to accept spatio-temporal shifts in habitat quality (mosaic cycles) which may result in an accelerated decline of biodiversity if the biological attributes and requirements of the species do not match the long-term spatio-temporal prope1ties of the habitat quality pattern. Habitat models of more than 60 plant species showed a significant response to environmental factors, i.e. mainly to browsing in wintertime and to soil pH. The plant traits height, leaf distribution, and spacer length responded most strongly to secondary succession. Based on viability analyses carried out for a selection of four focal plant species, and habitat models of three grasshopper species and four butterfly species, it is recommended that rototilling should be carried out every third or fourth year. With respect to the spatiotemporal pattern of rototilling, simulations showed a wide range of possibilities for the spatial extent and temporal frequency of rototilling which support a diverse set of life histories.
