Abstract We investigated sets of constitutional isomers of substituted aromatic methoxy
compounds using ion mobility spectrometry with different techniques of atmospheric
pressure ionization to assess the influence of different substituents and their position
within the molecule on the ionization pathways and drift behavior. Depending on the
ionization technique used, ion mobility spectrometry shows differences in the
ionization pathways of aromatic compounds containing functional groups which result
in a different number and different relative abundance of product ions formed
depending on the nature and position of the substituents. Differences in ion mobility
spectra of isomeric compounds are primarily observed if clustered ions are formed.
