| Abstract | Die flächendeckende Verfehlung des guten ökologischen Zustands gemäß Wasserrahmenrichtlinie hat vielfältige Ursachen. Bisher wenig diskutiert wurde die Rolle des derzeitigen Bewertungsverfahrens, das v. a. auf Ökosystemstrukturen fokussiert. Im Beitrag werden Potenziale der Ergänzung des Bewertungsverfahrens um Ökosystemfunktionen erörtert. In einer Fallstudie wird an einem Indikator gezeigt, wie sich durch eine funktionale Perspektive Wirkungszusammenhänge erkennen lassen, die eine effizientere Maßnahmenplanung ermöglichen. The widespread failure to achieve the environmental objectives of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) in Germany has many reasons. Among them, current methods to determine the ecological status of water bodies have not been discussed sufficiently yet. These assessment methods focus on ecosystem structures and particularly on species compositions. In this paper, the authors discuss the potential of including indicators for ecosystem functions into the assessment procedure. Taking the Holtemme River, situated in the Harz Mountains, as case study, the authors use the functional indicator ‚ecosystem metabolism‘ for illustrating the analysis of the relationship between pressures and water status, tracing cause-effect relationships. This could be a starting point for a more differentiated study of pressures and a more efficient planning of river restoration measures in multiple stress situations. |
