Abstract | Anaerobic digestion (AD) of biogenic materials is a core contributor to biogas production and thus an important component of bioenergy supply. However, AD process instabilities can threaten the economic viability of AD plants. One of these process upsets is the uncontrollable formation of foam. Foam generally causes the blocking of gas pipes in anaerobic digesters, and the produced biogas then escapes through the pressure safety device into the atmosphere. In addition, foam can cause technical problems with pumps, feeders, and measuring sensors. Foam formation in AD is a very complex phenomenon that can have various causes that are not always easy to identify. In this chapter, the current research on AD foaming is summarized. After a general literature review of foam in biotechnological processes, the development of methods for investigations of foam formation and stabilization is described. The causes of foaming and countermeasures that have been developed so far are presented. Surveys of AD plant operators are also introduced in a separate section. Although there has been comprehensive research in the last decade on identifying the causes of foaming, many issues remain unclear. Recommendations for further research are given in the last section. |
