Abstract The EuMon project was launched on 1st of November 2004 to make a first large-scale assessment of biodiversity monitoring schemes and practices in Europe and to develop recommendations for the involvement of volunteers in monitoring schemes as well as for the design and analysis of monitoring programs. EuMon further harmonized methods for determining   national responsibilities for the conservation of species and habitats, reviewed methods for systematic reserve site selection, and evaluated the Natura 2000 network.
The main results of the project were translated into tools: a) DaEuMon, which consists of two databases, one that contains information about volunteer involvement in monitoring schemes and the other one that contains
methodological characteristics of monitoring schemes; b) BioMAT, which is a web based support tool
to extract and analyze information from DaEuMon and to provide guidelines for the analysis of monitoring data and the design of monitoring schemes; c) three policy briefs that summarize important results for coordinators of monitoring schemes, managers, and policy makers: A primer for biodiversity monitoring, Guidelines for the identification of national responsibilities and conservation priorities in Europe;
Recommendations for volunteer involvement in monitoring schemes.
