Abstract | The global demand for energy, particularly fuels, will continue to increase significantly in the future. In addition to other options, such as increased efficiencies, traffic reduction and relocation, and electro-mobility, biofuels are strongly advocated to compensate for a large proportion of the forecast consumption in the years to come. Against this background, this chapter considers the most important biofuels options. A selection of biofuel options (biodiesel, bioethanol, biomethane, hydrotreated vegetable oils and fats, lignocellulosic-based fuels) were characterized by their technologies and stage of development. Moreover, they were analyzed concerning technical, economic, and environmental aspects (lifecycle analysis). From a technical viewpoint, certain criteria are important, including plant capacities and energetic efficiency. In order to determine the competitiveness of biofuels, economic issues such as investments in biofuel plants and biofuel production costs were considered. Moreover environmental issues (especially greenhouse gas emissions) and the relevant drivers along the value chain are important. The results show that each of the biofuel options are characterized by specific benefits and drawbacks. For future R&D and sustainable market implementation, the target and also the challenge are to maximize the biomass-to-products ratio. For that reason, the approach of biorefineries is attracting increasing attention. |
