Abstract Dermocystid mesomycetozoan parasites and especially species from the genus Amphibiocystidium are known to infect several European amphibian species and one species (A. ranae) was associated with a recent decline of frogs in Italy. Nonetheless, the distribution of these parasites remains largely unknown, underlining an urgent need to document both the geographical distribution of this disease and its impact on amphibian species. In this study, we report the distribution of gross skin lesions characteristic of infection by Amphibiocystidium sp. in the Pyrenean department of Ariège (France). Five of
nine populations contained infected individuals with a mean prevalence of 12.1%, while we did not observe a difference in prevalence between males and females. Altitudinal distribution of infected individuals ran from 400 to 1700 meter. Compared to other populations, prevalence in this study was low but the discovery of infected individuals at high elevation (up to 1700m) raises additional conservation issues.
