Abstract An analysis on the samples of aerobic granules selected from a municipal wastewater treatment plant shows that the diameters of the granules fall mainly within the range of 0.2~0.8 mm, their average roundness is 1.29, free settling velocities range from 10 to 42 m h^(-1) and specifi c oxygen uptake rate (SOUR) is from 14.2 to 18.9 mg g^(-1) h^(-1), which is lower than that of activated sludge. The aerobic granules and floc activated sludge have similar VSS/SS. The weight percentage of the aerobic granules in total biomass ranges from 0.1% to 0.5%. The images taken by CLSM (Confocal laser scanning microscope) indicate that the granules mainly consist of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) in the core and the bacteria in the granules are found most at depth between 0 and 100 µm below the surface, while a few between 100 and 400 µm.
