Abstract

A periodically flooded serpentine soil was incubated using an automated biogeochemical microcosm system. Predefined redox-windows were created from reducing to oxidizing conditions and continuously monitored. The temporal dynamics of soluble Ni, iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and sulfate (SO4 2-) were determined simultaneously. The results indicated that Ni can be mobilized to a considerable amount during low EH, while elevating soil redox status from reducing to oxidizing conditions led to decrease in soluble Ni concentrations. Nickel mobility was primarily affected by a formation of Ni-DOC complexes, whereas Ni immobilization came as a result of Fe/Mn oxide re-oxidation. The revealed Ni reactivity indicates that these shortterm variations in soluble Ni concentrations should be considered in relation to temporal risk assessment, management practice or remediation strategies in serpentine floodplains.
