Abstract

Reurbanisation processes have been observed recently as an evolving pathway of urban development in some eastern German cities. They are set against the specific framework of simultaneous population shrinkage and fading suburbanisation. It occurs as an increasing in-migration as well as diminishing out-migration from the inner city. Taken together, both the quantitative and qualitative processes lead to a stabilisation of the housing function of the core city. Starting from a critical debate of the reurbanisation concept this article aims to scrutinise whether it can serve as an appropriate explanatory framework for the currently changing patterns of spatial development in eastern Germany. Reurbanisation is applied to both processes on the urban macro-scale and the mesoscale of inner-city districts. By using mainly regional, local and small-scale data from municipal statistics, reurbanisation processes are in more detail analysed for the city of Leipzig. The paper concludes that in eastern Germany there is evolving a new, specific phenomenon: the simultaneousness of shrinkage, fading suburbanisation and rising reurbanisation.
