Research

My past research was focused on the achievement of stable partial nitritation and anammox processes when treating urban wastewater at low temperatures. The main challenges I faced were (i) to enhance the growth of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in detriment of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria and (ii) to maximize the activity of anammox bacteria, at such conditions. To understand the role, interactions and main characteristics of these microorganisms was of paramount importance to achieve a successful operation of the bioreactors. Nowadays, I’m deeply interested in gaining understanding in microorganisms that have an important role in bioprocesses. By understanding their physiology and biochemistry, not just bioprocesses can be improved, but also key mechanisms occurring in nature can be unraveled. My current work is focused on biochemical and physiological characterization of anammox bacteria.
