Expertise and Research Endeavors

Dr. Najafi is specializing in droughts and flood forecasting, actively contributing to the development of early warning systems. He has played a significant role in the development of real-time soil moisture forecasting system in Germany, HS2S, in Germany. His work involves operationalizing drought forecasting systems and investigating impact-based flood early warning, recognized with the UFZ Young Scientist Award for Applied Research in 2022.

Currently, Dr. Najafi is actively involved in the development of an experimental impact-based flood warning system using the Seamless Integrated Forecasting System within the framework of SINFONY in selected catchments in Germany. Prior to joining UFZ, he had key roles as a short-term scholar at Princeton and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. His scientific contributions extend to providing policy advice on water resources management in semi-arid regions of Southwest Asia over several years. Dr. Najafi's commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and practical applications underscores his contributions to environmental science and policy.

Modular Observation Solution for Earth Systems (MOSES)

Novel observing systems will improve understanding of the complex interactions across scales and Earth compartments. My research is part of the MOSES  project, a joint facility in the research field “Earth and Environment” proposed and implemented by the Helmholtz Centres.

Online forecast information out of my research will provide information for conducting new event-oriented observation campaigns and contributing to progress in Earth observation. Forecast information of weekly precipitation, maximum air-temperature and soil moisture over Germany contributed to MOSES by UFZ will be disseminated online via the HS2S weblink.
