Abstract Effects of Mowing Date and Frequency on the Alcon Blue - Results of habitat analyses and mowing experiments in the Alpine Foothills In the context of the European research project MacMan extensive studies have been conducted over the last years with the aim to develop suitable management strategies for endangered species, e.g. for the butterfly alcon blue (Maculinea alcon L.). The present paper provides an overview of results of a research project conducted by the Bavarian Academy for Nature Conservation and Landscape Management ('ANL') and presents practical management recommendations. The study comprised the investigation of 73 habitats on 714 plots in the Bavarian and Austrian Alpine Foothills, recording and comparing several habitat parameters. These included vegetation type and structure, quantity and vitality of food-plants, occurrence of host-ants and egg densities correlated to the current management. Whilst for the alcon blue populations depending on G. pneumonanthe an annual mowing proved best for meadows belonging to the vegetation units Molinion and Caricion davallianae this frequency seems not to be necessary for the less productive litter meadows dominated by small sedges. For populations mainly feeding on G. asclepiadea a mowing frequency of less than one year is more beneficial. Cuttingintervals of three or more years, however, are not recommended since mechanical mowing becomes difficult and the increase of vegetation density may contradict to the protection of other endangered species in these habitats. Our results on the phenology of the immature stages show significant differences between the two species of Gentiana and indicate high losses if mowing takes place before middle of September in case of G. pneumonanthe. For populations feeding on G. asclepiadea a mowing date later than September proved best. In many cases it will be necessary to diversify the management type and intensity on a small scape in order to meet the requirements of different target species of litter meadow coenoses, since they partly demand contradicting management measures.
