Abstract Evapotranspiration and ability of ryegrass, corn and spring barley to use water and nitrogen efficiently were studied by comparing different ground water influenced soils. Additionally, the leaching of different tracers as chloride, nitrate and 15N-labelled nitrate applicated in autumn was analyzed. The objective of this study was testing and tuning of model assumptions of water and solute movement in the case of shallow groundwater and checking the suitability of tracers. Depending from the substrate of soils, mean evapotranspiration rates during the vegetation period were about 60-90 % of the potential grass reference evapotranspiration at water tables of 55-70 cm (grass) and 90-100 cm (corn, spring barley). Crops grown on deep clay soil had highest efficiency of water and nitrogen use. The soils tested are closely associated in real fields. However, they showed extremely different behaviour of water movement and solute leaching. At clay soils, the leaching risk is very low. Sand gley soils had a relatively high demand of ground water supply but a low yield level, a fast leaching of nutrients out of the main rootzone and low efficiency of water and nitrogen use. Due to intensive N-transformation processes, the behaviour of fertilizer-N cannot be characterized by chloride. Measurements using labelled N are required.
