Abstract When designing national strategies for the integration of bioenergy in high share of renewable energy systems, decision makers have to be aware of the extended requirements for bioenergy but also on the effects of bioenergy usage within the context of the different sustainability dimensions. They must be able to identify at an early stage possible barriers when pursuing the implementation of a certain bioenergy application or bioenergy system services as such. Therefore, next to technical, systemic, ecological and economic criteria as often addressed within climate and energy strategies also the societal dimension is covered. In this respect the immanent question of how to actually achieve a societal transformation and implement bioenergy in 100% renewable energy system is addressed. Further on, the technical and economic feasibility and potential of bioenergy technologies capturing CO2 has been included as an own criteria category. As a result an assessment matrix has been developed. It describes in which sustainability dimension barriers could occur when pursuing a certain bioenergy application/integration. And thus calls for attention and action by policy makers. One important outcome concerning the criteria “potential of bioenergy technologies capturing CO2” is that rather large-scale systems as biorefineries offer the option for an almost complete capture of the CO2, while smaller installations are better ranked in the social indicators.
