Abstract | We investigated the systematics of the genus Isocolus Först. (gall wasps) attacking mainly flower heads of the host genus Centaurea (Cardueae, Centaureinae). Biochemical and morphometrical techniques provided similar results. WIthin the genus Isocolus we found two major groups of species attacking two well separated lineages of Centaurea species. This major division within the genus Isocolus may be explained by a scenario of cospeciation. But within each Isocolus group host relationships are more likely caused by niche shifts to different plant structure and host transfers. A general analysis of genetic distances of gall forming insects on thistles and their hosts suggests that cospeciation is rare. |
