Abstract Fulfilling the ambitious greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets in Germany requires the use of renewable technologies in the heat sector. Biomass is the renewable key player in the heterogeneous German heat sector today, having many possible applications for its use. Our investigation aims on finding the applications in the heat sector, in which biomass is used as a competitive key technology to fulfill the defined GHG reduction targets. To address this topic, we set up an economic optimization model, investigating the cost optimal allocation of biomass under long-term climate protection scenarios until 2050. In our model, the complete heat sector (residential, trade and commerce and the industry sector) is represented in detail within several sub-sectors. Within each of these sub-sectors, representative renewable and fossil technology options are in competition. Between the defined sub-sectors, the limited biomass potential is optimally allocated. Total system costs are minimized until 2050 in a yearly resolution, while fulfilling the defined climate protection targets. The findings from the modelling show that in an 80% GHG reduction scenario biomass is mainly used in the form of wood pellets and wood chips. Pellets are a competitive option in combined heat and power (CHP) hybrid biomass heating technologies in the private household sector, while wood chips are utilized in industry applications.
