Climate change mitigation is a global problem. One solution are renewable energies. Within these technologies renewable methane made from biomass is a well suited option. This methane is often referred as biomethane respective bio-SNG. Thereby the option biomethane is mostly used for the methane which is produced via the biochemical conversion of biomass including upgrading of biogas. While the option bio-SNG describes the methane, which is produced via the thermochemical conversion by gasification and methanation of biomass. On the one side the renewable methane from biomass is well suited for replacing fossil fuels because of its sustainability character. On the other side it can make use of the already well applied and implemented infrastructure and applications of natural gas because of its chemical equality to natural gas. Also, it can be blended up to 100 % with natural gas, which is another advantage of renewable biomethane in contrast to other energy carriers. It can be used in a wide range for energy production (heat, electricity), transport and as a chemical base product for further processing. The technology concepts for producing biomethane and bio-SNG are very diverse and hard to compare. Therefore a novel methodology was developed and applied in this thesis. It allows the comparison of highly different technologies by using a multi-criteria approach. Into this multi-criteria analysis a Delphi-Survey is included. This allows the prioritisation of the chosen criteria by a group of experts. Thereby the Delphi-Survey is based on a multi round survey where the anonymity of the experts is ensured. The multi round survey allows an objectively prioritisation of all criteria by referring to the mean value of the former survey rounds. In the result of the Delphi-Survey as well as the whole multi-criteria analysis a ranking of all evaluated technology alternatives is given. For each technology concept three substrate types were applied. As a result in total 66 biomethane and 33 bio-SNG alternatives are evaluated. For the biochemical alternatives energy crops and organic household waste and for the thermochemical alternatives residual wood and short coppice rotation wood were applied. Additionally, straw was chosen for both conversion pathways as a third substrate. It was chosen provide a basis to enable a comprehensive evaluation of the two different technology pathways, because straw is one of the few substrates which can be converted within both pathways. Further, an outlook for the cost development of the technology concepts within Europe till 2030 is given. Therefore learning curves, biomass potential and plant expansion during the years were examined. As a result the cost development for the different technology pathways, within the set framework, is given. It can be summarized, that at the beginning of the evaluation the cost for bio-SNG are higher than for the biomethane. With increasing number of installed bio-SNG plants and regard to the high learning potential of this new technology, the cost for bio-SNG are in the end (2030) similar to the biomethane cost. In conclusion, the thesis contributes to the research and science in form of a novel methodology for technology comparison, new and extensive technology data as well as an outlook for the cost development for renewable methane from biomass. Additionally the applied methods, e.g. Delphi- Survey, are being more visible for researchers and stakeholders to conduct to their awareness and implementation. |
