Abstract Concept for monitoring the effects of climate change on biodiversity in Thuringia. A concept for monitoring the effects of climate change on biodiversity was developed within a project funded by the Agency for Environment and Geology of the German federal state of Thuringia. First of all, indicators suitable to detect climatically induced changes in biodiversity were identified. The focus was laid on phenological changes, population trends of climate-sensitive species, shifts in species distributions, and changes in community composition. The indicator "Community Temperature Index" which reflects the relation between high- and low-temperature dwelling species within a community was calculated based on butterfly and dragonfly records from Thuringia. lt could be shown that species adapted to higher temperatures have relatively increased between the period from 1992 to 2012. Existing monitoring schemes from Thuringia were evaluated regarding their suitability to analyze climate change effects on biodiversity. lt turned out that only a few of the investigated schemes can be integrated into a monitoring of climate change impacts in their current form. Therefore, recommendations for additions and modifications were given to meet future requirements.
