Abstract | Current estimates of species extinctions indicate a sharp increase in extinction rates over the past two decades due to human-caused changes in habitats (Korneck & Sukopp 1988, Henle & Streit 1990). The most noticeable and probably most important change is the reduction of the amount of (semi-)natural habitat primarily due to the expansion of agriculture and increased deforestation but also due to urbanization in densly populated Central Europe (Vos & Zonneveld 1993). A cycle of agricultural development followed by overexploitation of the land and destruction of forests has been repeated throughout recorded history. Two-and-a-half millenia ago, Plato voiced his concern about the destruction of the land in his contemporary Attica (Oedekoven 1992). |
