Biodiversity and Species Coexistence

A major challenge has been to understand how the amazing diversity of life on this planet evolved, what maintains it; why not more species and why not less? At the same time, environmental change is threatening this diversity and we need a robust theoretical framework that is linked to data to understand these questions:
  • What are the mechanisms that allow species to coexist?
  • What are the environmental drivers that lead to biodiversity loss, and how?

We test and develop ecological theory to better predict the consequences of environmental changes in rainfall, temperature and nutrient pollution.
