Research interests

My research is primarily centered on understanding the impact of viruses, especially double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) bacteriophages, on microbial communities in terrestrial ecosystems. Utilizing extensive biological databases, my goal is to unravel the complex interactions between viruses and bacteria on a global scale within the framework of the Collaborative Research Centre 1076 AquaDiva.

In addition, I am involved in developing resources and tools for microbial ecology, such as curated repositories for terrestrial metagenomes (TerrestrialMetagenomeDB) and bioinformatics tools for protein annotation in microbial communities. These contributions aid in understanding complex microbial structures and functions, especially in niche environments like benzene-mineralizing and nitrate-reducing ecosystems, thereby advancing both environmental understanding and biotechnological innovation.
