Finances & Controlling (FCO)

The department Finances & Controlling (FCO) is the central point of contact for all financial matters at the UFZ. Further on, the department regards its main responsibilities as strategic, medium-term and operational financial planning and control in the context of programme-based funding, providing decision support to the executive management on financial issues as well as coordinating internal and external business management reporting for the UFZ.

  • Because the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research is organised under private law, it is obligated to perform its own commercial accounting and to compile annual financial statements in compliance with the legal provisions of the German Commercial Code (HGB) for large corporations.
  • It is the role of the finance department to record and provide evidence of all of the centre’s business transactions, to provide information to financial authorities and to compile annual financial statements as well as monitor the correctness of financial processes.
  • The finance department also provides information on the financial status of the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research to the executive management board, organisational units, supervisory committees, business partners, sponsoring partners and external clients as well as all auditing bodies.
  • The UFZ’s business travel section is also assigned to the finance department. The Employees in the business travel section plan, book and deal with the invoicing of business trips for UFZ employees in compliance with the Federal Cost Law for travel expenses.
