Current research

Structure elucidation can be limited for some groups even by liquid chromatography. Therefore diagnostic derivatization is a viable solution to improve selectivity and sensitivity for these compounds.
Compounds containing aromatic amino groups are of widespread occurrence in the environment and many of them exhibit mutagenic of carcinogenic potencies after metabolic activation. However, detection of aromatic amines by LC-HRMS fragmentation is not unambiguously possible. Therefore, a diagnostic derivatization procedure will be developed to label aromatic amines in complex environmental sample extracts using post-column/pre-column derivatization techniques. Based on a comparison with the underivatized sample and characteristic fragment ions it will allow for a straightforward detection of aromatic amines for further identification and isolation. Identified aromatic amines will be analyzed by selected bioassays in order to understand their contribution to the mutagenicity of the sample. The developed method will be applied to the Higher-tier EDA samples based on the outcomes of the European Demonstration Program (EDP).
