ClimateAdaptationsSantiago

Focus

The project aims to integrate three key sectors - energy, water, and land use - and to analyze the vulnerabilities associated with these sectors, in order to obtain suitable adaptive measures for the RM that can be translated into a long term adaptation strategy and implemented in practice.

The project adopts the following objectives:

  • Estimate the main climatic changes expected for the urban region of Santiago de Chile. Existing studies and data will be evaluated in order to reach concrete conclusions regarding climate change in the study area.
  • Estimate the effects of climate changes on the key sectors - water, energy and land use - as well as the associated vulnerabilities, through a detailed analysis of the various issues involved and an assessment of the inter-linkages between them by developing explorative scenarios.
  • Identify and evaluate different adaptive measures within these scenarios by implementing it in the context of a participatory process with local stakeholders (round table) that includes the development, prioritization and determination of a set of existing measures.
  • Establishment of a legal and institutional framework (in collaboration with the Regional Government and related ministries) in Santiago de Chile with the objective of implementing long term adaptive measures. Development of informational material both for authorities and for raising awareness in the population.
  • Generation, transfer and dissemination of knowledge through the establishment of a regional learning network. The main target groups are decision makers and scientists in other Latin America cities in order to transfer and adjust the process and the content of the Santiago strategy.

According to these overall objectives the project work is divided into five different working packages.
