Session 2 “Flexible (bio-) power – The future for biomass in the energy system?”

System integration of high shares of intermittent renewable sources (wind power and photovoltaics) into the power system is a big challenge. Beside demand side management, demand oriented power generation from renewable sources is a good opportunity. Bioenergy offers here good potentials since it can be generated if needed. Therefore, we will discuss the potential of biomass to support the system integration of fluctuating renewables, the role of policies or incentives and the design of future electricity markets to activate these potentials. Further we discuss the role of biomass in a CHP systems for a flexible and sustainable energy system.

- What are the potentials of biomass to support the system integration of intermittent renewable sources?
- What incentives or policies are needed to implement flexible bio-power generation?
- How could the future electricity market look like to foster the integration of renewables into the energy system?
- What role could district heating play within a sustainable energy system?
