Water Research Horizon Conference
The Water Research Horizon Conference acts as a platform of dialogue on the Grand Challenges in water research. In its frame, the water science community meets annually to discuss among the various disciplines of water research on the major challenges to be met by integrated water science. National and international experts exchange on the fields of research that were identified during the 1st Water Research Horizon Conference, which will be further developed to fit the needs and available tools and methods. As a result of the 1st Water Research Horizon Conference, which took place in July 2010 in Berlin, a “White Paper” was formulated presenting the six priority research fields.
This conference, which is a major annual event of the Water Science Alliance, is organized by the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ, who is the initiator of the Water Science Alliance.
WRHC - New Initiatives in Water Research
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Water Research Horizon Conference on “New Initiatives in Water Research”, “New Concepts in Model Development and Data Integration for Understanding Water, Matter and Energy Fluxes at Management Scale” and "New Perspectives in Integrated Monitoring, Assessment and Management in the Water Sector" took place in July 2010, June 2011 and July 2012 in Berlin. More than 200 participants from the national water research community were discussing together with national and international experts who presented their view on the major challenges in water research.
The 1st conference was based around discussions on the challenges presented in the draft version of the White Paper. The White Paper was put forward by a preparatory committee which consisted of the major national funding organizations, representatives from the water related research associations and panels as well as the relevant national agencies.
The Water Research Horizon Conference was meanwhile developed into a yearly event, each with a focus on one or several research fields described in the White Paper. The 4th Water Research Horizon Conference, to be held on 25 & 26 June 2013 in Berlin, will focus on Research Field 1 "New Challenges Emerging from Global and Climate Change: Food and Water, mega-Urbanisation, Risk and Vulnerability" and Research Field 6 "Water Scarcity: New Perspectives for a Circum-Mediterranean Research Initiative".
The annual Water Research Horizon Conference is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nuclear Safety and Nature Protection (BMU), and the German Research Foundation (DFG).
